ITRUDUCTION ABOUT GABI

                                                                Growing gabi

Among the rootcrops in the philipines, gabi ranks third in production and hectarage. It is because gabi is grown only as a bakyard crop and is seldon planted in more than one hectare of land.

Recently, more and more uses of gabi have been discovered. The stem and the leaves are not used as vegetables but are also used to feed swine. Aside from being used as substitute for rice and corn as stple food being used as substitute for rice and corn as staple food, the corn and carmels are also processed into flour, starch, baby food and other high value food products.

A closer look at the gabi industry reveals several problems. One of the problems encountered by the farmers is low production because of poor cultural management practices.

This technoguide contains the recomended cultural management practices to increase gabi production. Some information included here areproducts of the researches conducted by philrootcrops.

                                                 CASSAVA

Cassava (mahinot esculenta crantz.) is the most important root crop in the tropics and ranks fourth after rice, wheat and corn as calorie source for human consumption. in the philipines  it is utilized as food, feed, alcohol and the emerging bio fuel industry.

In support to country`s cassava industry, philrootcrops undertakes a continuing crop improvement program to develop[ new and improved varieties. There are 46 yielding varieties recommended for cultivation.

The demand for cassava in the country is not met. This is mainly due to the lack of planting materials of high yielding varieties and the lack of capability to mass propagates because of slow and limited distribution of planting materials.

Traditionally, cassava is propagated vegetatively using 15-30 cm cassava takes with 7-8 viable nodes. multiplication rate is 1:10;one stem cutting will yield 10 planting materials after 10-12 months. Rapid propagation techniques are already available. It is essential to develop skills and capability for the mass propagation of cassava in order to sustain the supply of HYVs planting material for industry. This brochure will show the rapid propagation techniques and production of clean planting material for cassava.

                                   Growing sweet potato

sweet potato is considered as one of the important food sources in the philipines. aside from this, it is used in the manufactured of the industrial products like flour and starch and as a raw material in the commercial production of animal feeds.
moreover, sweet potato can be processed into different food products with higher economic value than fresh roots.

Because of its many uses, the demand for sweet potato has  significantly increased. This demand, however, has not been met because of the recurrent problem on low farm productivity.

This techoguide contains  the recommended cultural management practices to increase the yield of sweet potato. Information include here are products of researches conducted by the Philrootcrops. It is hoped that this techno-guide can used by farmers, technicians and other users to increase sweet potato production in the country.

Why invest in orchids?

Filipinos are known for their keen appreciation and exquisite taste for beauty. That is probably why we also have that natural affinity for gardens. No fillipino home, no matter how humble and simple, is without a simple garden. One will find one,two or more group of flowering or foliage plants around the houses even in the remotest areas of the country. Filipinos have always been fascinated by flowering plants particularly orchids.
phalaenopsis (butterfly orchids),dendrobiums (relative of sanggumay) and  vandas (relative of waling waling)
both native and hybrids, adorn many homes and gardens. This is not surprising considering that there are many attractive orchids that can only be found in the philipines..

Some orchids are difficult to grow and quite exacting in their cultural requirements. thus growers are on the look-out for easy-to-grow types. The semitrete vandas readily fit in this category. aside from having a no fuss character, they are popular and flower profusely all year around  their flowers which come in different shapes and colors such as red, pink, blue, green, yellow, and white are in great demand locally. records also show that world demand for orchid products continue to grow. in addition  demand for vandas flower, just like other flower picks up tremendously during special months of February (month of the hearts), may (fiesta and santacruzan month), June (weding month), November month for remembering the dead) and December (holiday season and gift giving month). During these special month, increased demand and price go hand-in-hand thus, ensuring good income for grower. Flower are made into corsages, bouquets, or placed in vases  flower as cut flower. on the other hand , plants in twigs or driftwood are landscape material.

Unlike other cut flower that require expensive structure for their production to protect them from the sun and rain, semitrete vandas are happy under the sun and flower best in full sunlight. These are also more resistant to diseases compared with other protection from the heavy monsoon rain in June to October.

cut flower production does not require a big area to be profitable. A 100-m2 lot is enough to generate good income. An unused piece of land around the house can be used for this purpose. Aside from beautifying the home, cut flower for production can also be a source of additional income.

why invest in agricultural inputs?

Production or trade of agricultural inputs can be a rewarding investment provide that some basics requirements are observed.Agricultural inputs refer to goods and services used for the production of agricultural products. examples of these in crop production are seeds/planting materials , fertilizer(either organic or organic),and pesticides. In livestock, example of inputs are feeds and veterinary products.Labor is an integral input in any agricultural enterprise so provision of labor can be viable enterprise in itself . for instance in mango production, there are business which train and maintain fruit baggers and offer fruit  bagging service to mango producers. provisions of service with farm machines such as tractors and thresher has also become a good source of income .

This investment brief serves as a guide in starting up an enterprise which would supply the needs of farmers for certain agricultural inputs. It provides general tips to consider before embarking on the business.

4 General tips

1. Identify the investment opportunities in the area

Agricultural inputs support the production of certain agricultural outputs. it is then important to first identify what are the major agricultural outputs in the locality. this information can easily be obtained from the municipal agricultural office(MAO).in general , an agricultural input enterprise is more profitable and sustainable if it supplies to input needs of major agricultural products in the area

2.determine the current gaps in supply and demand

Potential demand for inputs in your locality can easily be estimated for certain agricultural products. for instance, if you want to estimate the total fertilizer requirement (e.g.,14-14-14) for palay in your municipality, you simply get the information on total palay hectarage in your municipality and the average number of bags of complete fertilizer applied per cropping. this information can easily be obtained from the MAO. if total hectarage is 5000 and the average application of complete fertilizer is 4 bags/ha,
then your municipality needs at least 20,000 bags of complete fertilizer per cropping or 40, 000 bags per year assuming two cropping per year. the same estimation can be done for other commodities which need complete fertilizer

Supply can easily be estimated by discretely interviewing the current suppliers of agricultural inputs in your municipality. agricultural inputs trader (e.g., store selling fertilizer, chemicals, feeds, veterinary supplies, ect.)are normally local in the main municipal market or town capital. absence of inputs traders in you municipality clearly indicates the farmer are buying their inputs from other towns. this means that putting up one on your municipality could be a lucrative venture. however when there are existing input traders, you have to determine how much they are supplying and compare this to the estimated demand. if the supply is less than the demand, there is a supply-demand gap.this means that the existing market can still accommodate a new entrant.

3.Diversify your product lines

Have as many product lines as possible so that your business can serve as a sort of one-shop for agricultural inputs. farmers normally need several types of inputs and they would prefer to purchase from a store where all tier needs can be met, both for convenience and to minimize their transportation cost. deciding on the proper mix of products can be guided by instance,if certain chemical insecticide that are commonly used in your municipality are in defected then you can have more of these products in your products lines.

4.Aim for consignment basis with your suppliers

It is common for inputs suppliers i.e.,companies and distributors)to agree on consignment basis provide you are able to maintain good credit standing. consignment is highly advantageous since this will allow you to minimize risk of losses associated with unwanted stocks. it may also enable you to have many different products with minimum capital requirement.
